Have you ever listened to the words of the Lincoln Brewster song, “Today is the day?”  As I listen to the lyrics it reminded me that “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.” “The clock is running. We need to make the most of today. Time waits for no one.  I don’t know about you but time seems to be the one thing I never seem to have enough of.  It is so easy to even take for granted the gift that God has given me of this breath.  Listen to some of the lyrics from “Today Is The Day”;

I’m casting my cares aside
I’m leaving my past behind
I’m setting my heart and mind on You
Jesus

I’m reaching my hand to Yours
Believing there’s so much more
Knowing that all You have in store for me is good
Is good

Today is the day You have made
I will rejoice and be glad in it
Today is the day You have made
I will rejoice and be glad in it

And I won’t worry about tomorrow
I’m trusting in what You say
Today is the day

I putting my fears aside
I’m leaving my doubts behind
I’m giving my hopes and dreams to You
Jesus

I’m reaching my hands to Yours
Believing there’s so much more
Knowing that all You have in store for me is good
Is good

I will stand upon Your truth
I will stand upon Your truth
And all my days I’ll live for You
All my days I’ll live for You

And I won’t worry about tomorrow
I’m giving You my fears and sorrows
Where You lead me I will follow
I’m trusting in what You say
Today is the day

I love this song’s upbeat and positive message, however, at times I struggle to remember how important it is to celebrate today.  At times all I can see is the heartache, the pain, and the suffering.  Have you had days like that?  How difficult is it for you to keep your eyes on Jesus when the world around you is going CRAZY?

The Bible tells us to “pray all the time” (1 Thessalonians 5:17 MSG). I was reading a message written by Rick Warren and he said, How is it possible to do this? One way is to use “breath prayers” throughout the day, as many Christians have done for centuries. You choose a brief sentence or a simple phrase that can be repeated to Jesus in one breath: “You are with me.” “I receive your grace.” “I’m depending on you.” “I want to know you.” “I belong to you.” “Help me trust you.” You can also use a short phrase of Scripture: “For me to live is Christ.” “You will never leave me.” “You are my God.”

We need to do this so often that it becomes a habit, that it goes deep down to our roots. It is interesting that Jesus doesn’t promise the circumstances of our lives will always be great. In fact, in the Gospel of John, Jesus says in this world you will have trouble (Jn 16:33). We can count on it.  It’s impossible to get through life unscathed.  So when life hits us we will be prepared, we will be like palm trees they are designed to bend. When the storms come, palm trees can bend quite a lot, even to the point of being horizontal to the ground. But they don’t break.

During the storm, you might look at the palm tree flattened against the ground and think it’s a goner. But when the storm dies down, the palm tree is able to stand upright again. Scientists have found when the storm is over and the palm tree stands upright again, the palm tree is actually stronger than it was before the storm. It comes back from the storm better and stronger than ever.

We will never understand why some storms come into our lives, but what a promise it is to know that Jesus is walking right next to us as we walk through the tough times of life.  So as the song says,  I won’t worry about tomorrow
I’m trusting in what You say,  “Today Is The Day”.
